Steven Carlyle Moore

Someone Standing on an Extremely Large Tongue, 2022

Steven Carlyle Moore is a Minneapolis-based visual artist with a studio in the Solar Arts Building in Northeast Minneapolis. He attended the University of Minnesota BFA program for Studio Arts as well as the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and the Minneapolis College of Art & Design.

Artist and jurist Aya Kawaguchi wrote of Moore’s work:

“Steven Carlyle Moore defines himself as an expressionist. He explores his inner landscape of emotions and experiences and tries to capture the fleeting moments surrounding him. With striking narrative images constructed of bold brushstrokes, choices of color, and compositions, one might feel estranged or unstable. German expressionism arose from the social uncertainties caused by social inequality, violence, and the pandemic of the early 20th Century, which, in many ways, parallels contemporary society. In this way, Moore’s choice seems appropriate and relevant. Diverse elements embedded in his unique visual landscape give viewers space and time to ponder their introspection, inviting them to face their insecurities and fears deep within their psyche. Moore’s paintings are an aggressive critique of our society.”
